Fats: How They Keep Your Dog Healthy, Happy and Sniffing

Believe it or not, fats are vitally important to your dog's ability to smell. Inukshuk Professional Dog Food's blend of fats provides the optimum balance for odour detection capability for K9s who work in security, explosive and cadaver field work.

How does fat affect a dog's ability to smell?

A dog's sense of smell is over 10,000 times more poignant than our own. One scientist described it: "If you make the analogy to vision, what you and I can see at a third of a mile, a dog could see more than 3,000 miles away and still see as well." (James Walter, former director of the Sensory Research Institute at Florida State University).

Dogs have over 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses where as humans only have about six million. Dogs' noses also work much differently than our own. When we inhale, we smell and breathe through the same airways within our nose as when we exhale. When dogs inhale, a tissue fold just inside their nostril helps to separate these two functions and when they exhale, air exits through slits on the sides of their noses, allowing them to sniff almost continuously. A high-fat diet can lower a dog's body temperature after exercise, reducing panting and improving their ability smell!

Our Food

Inukshuk Professional Dog Food contains a blend of three different fats: herring oil, chicken fat and flax seed oil. Although these are all equal in digestibility and energy level, the blend allows each individual dog to meet its particular health requirement.

Healthy fats play an important role in keeping your dog's coat in the best condition possible. Fat quality and variety will also provide extra benefits in both coat quality and mental health

Dogs on low-quality commercial dog food or improperly balanced homemade diets may not get enough nutrients to keep a healthy skin and coat.

Low fat diets can also be risky for dogs. Dry hair and skin lesions that become prone to infection are both well-known reactions to extreme low-fat diets.

Food with high omega-6 fatty acids can give a nice shine to a coat and help replace the oils in the skin. Omega-3 fatty acids can also help with skin disorders and allergies. Inukshuk Dog Food uses both fatty acids in all three formulas ensure your dog remains happy and healthy.
